Welcome to this second episode of Making an Album, a subseries here on my Substack where I document the journey of finishing up my album.
In this episode I share some of the pics/video from the drum session I had last weekend with local drummer, Jacob Cole. I play some of the raw audio we got and go over the nerdy engineering approach Clyde Rosencrance and I took for the recording.
Jacob is a handpan artist, world percussionist, and drummer with quite an online following. Check out his IG here.
Clyde is a good friend who’s my go-to audio engineer here in NEPA. His studio is called Republic Audio Studios which you can check out on IG here.
I also share what I’m working on this week - prepping for a big video shoot next month in Philly. Video is king, especially for musicians, and I’ll be working with some of the best on this project. Really exciting.
Enjoy! Please leave questions and comments in the comments section below or click this button. Not only am I happy to answer them and glad to have your engagement, it also helps my posts reach a wider audience.
Some pics from the drum session.

Tracking shenanigans.
Capturing some cymbal swells. We had a few minutes at the end, so I had Jacob record various cymbal swells that I can use in my various projects. Always good to have those on hand.
In Case You Missed It…
My Solemn Slade song, In My Memory, has gotten a little action on social media and I’ve just put a resource page for it - sheet music, performance video, stems, description, and more.
What I’m Loving Right Now…
Music. Lost Boy by PILOTPRIEST. The score to a 2016 sci-fi short film. It’s amazing and I hope to one day get to make a score like this one.
Books. Almost halfway through Donna Tartt’s The Secret History. I just love her writing.
Podcasts. Two episodes recently from The Free Press’ podcast, Honestly, on similar smartphone-related themes: “Why the Kids Aren’t Alright” and “Smartphones Rewired Childhood: Here’s How to Fix It”
Film. Atonement (2007). Nominated for 7 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, but only won one: Best Score. That says it all. Exquisite and innovative score matched well with an intriguing story, beautiful cinematography, and top shelf acting.
Article. Ashley gives voice to a very similar experience to mine. I long for the day I can delete my IG (and FB) account. For now, it’s still a necessary evil for musicians. But healthy, sustainable, supportive platforms like Substack (the one you’re reading this post on) are growing rapidly. Soon the time will come.
As always, thank you for being here.
