My New Studio!
The grand tour
Up until last fall, I’ve worked from home, turning an attic or a bedroom into a makeshift studio. But staring at the same four cramped walls everyday, rarely seeing anyone other than my family, was beginning to get to me. So when the opportunity came up to sublease an office space in Scranton’s historic Lace Village, I jumped at the opportunity. Originally, I was just going to do my left-brain work there and reserve my home studio for creative work, but it wasn’t long before the opportunity to turn a larger adjacent room into a professional-grade studio came up, and I took it.
Newly renovated in an historic old brick building with a tall ceiling and huge windows – it was perfect for me. But it required a great deal of sound treatment, gear acquisition, and furniture to get it usable as a studio. I spent tens – maybe hundreds – of hours schooling myself, with the help of my producer friend, Clyde Rosencrance, on acoustics and designing affordable panels and bass traps that I built myself. I wanted to begin transitioning to a more hardware-based workflow, which also required schooling to figure out what I needed to have my bases covered. Between phone calls with Clyde, YouTube tutorials, and endless hunting on Ebay, Reverb, and FB Marketplace, I learned so much and got this thing off the ground in an incredibly short period of time.
And it’s paying off. Already I’ve had several recording sessions in here, I’ve landed my first professional producer job, and I’m more creative and productive than ever. I’ve been able to turn this space into one I look forward to being in all day everyday. It’s safe, inspiring, and fine-tuned to my way of working. It’s a nice 3.8 mile bike ride down Scranton’s beautiful Heritage Trail that I ride everyday. There’s a great coffee shop right on the premise. And it’s conveniently located in town, so besides the people I see regularly here, it’s been easy to get together with others.
I’ve always wanted a space that could foster local artistry. I feel so fortunate to have one. If there’s some way that my space or resources could serve your creative project, don’t hesitate to reach out.
Ok, enough typing. Here’s the grand tour:
